Kenny Roberts Jr who is the son of former MotoGP 500 cc racer Kenny Roberts is going to be made an MotoGP legend officially at Austin in Texas at the circuit of the Americans round on Friday in this season.
Kenny Roberts who is nick named as “KR JR” is the son of former American MotoGP rider King Kenny Roberts. He started his grand prix career in his father’s team “Team Roberts” in the 250 cc class, which was called as Moto2 in that time. After that he got promoted to race in the 500 cc MotoGP class in 1995.
He spent two seasons with Modenas KR3 and after that the American got success right away when he switched his team from Modenas KR3 to Team Suzuki at the year of 1999. In that year’s championship he assured a place in the podium with a win the first round of that season. He got the second place in the 1999 world championship only behind Alex Criville of Honda.
He won the MotoGP world championship in the year of 2000, til now it is his only world championship title as well as it is team Suzuki’s last world title. He repeated his four consecutive wins in 2000 and he shared the podium five further times as well. All of which helped him to beat the rookie Valentino Rossi who was riding for Honda at that time.
Kenny Roberts Jr stayed with the team Suzuki for the next five straight years but they could not manage to claim another championship title, Roberts could only got onto the podium for three times. Those were the times when Suzuki was struggling with the new four stroke class of MotoGP. Those were the initial stages of the new four stroke engine class of MotoGP and team Suzuki could not win a single title during those time.
He returned to his father’s team at the year of 2006. The name of that team was “Team Roberts” which was an independent team. That championship saw an re-energetic and younger looking Kenny Roberts Jr who won two podiums. He got a victory at the Estoril in the margin of fraction. He got the sixth position at the MotoGP world champoionship at 2006 with the KR211V which was powered by Honda.
But his performance went downhill when the championship began with 800cc bikes in 2007. He managed to gain only four points in seven games he started in 2007. After this disappointing start of the season he decided to call off his career and made an announcement of ending his racing career.
His father Kenny Roberts Sr who is a three times 500cc world champion is already been included into into the MotoGP Hall of Fame.
Kenny Roberts Jr has participated in a total of 185 races throughout his career. Among those he won in 8 races, finished on podiums 22 times, gained a total of 1210 points and won a title which was in 2000.
After Kenny Roberts Jr some other players are going to be inducted into the Hall of Fame. They are Marco Lucchinelli, Leslie Graham, Umberto Masetti, Libero Liberati and Gary Hocking who were some champions of MotoGP during 1949-2000 and were not yet included into the Hall of Fame.
