What is SHARP Rating?
In the motorcycle helmet certification, SHARP getting popular than other certification because of the reliability. SHARP (the Safety Helmet Assessment and Rating Program) is a British government quality ratings scheme established to provide motorcycle helmet certification in 2007. The basic objective of this programme is to improve the motorcycle safety on United Kingdom roads.
SHARP doesn’t take any helmets from the manufacturers, they bought a helmet from a random retail shop to test. This ensures that the helmets tested by SHARP are exactly the same as what UK motorcyclists can buy. The helmets are tested, seven for each model, using 32 tests, which aim to measure the protection they offer the brain in impacts at a variety of speeds, and against both flat surfaces and kerbs. It rates the helmet models from one to five stars – with five being the highest, and states that a five star rated helmet “offers good levels of protection right around the helmet. Here we showing you the process of testing a helmet by Sharp.
Helmet No. | Velocity | Impact type and location on helmet | Impact surface |
1 | 6.0 m/s | Linear impacts to Front, Left, Right, Crown and Rear | Flat anvil |
2 | 6.0 m/s | Linear impacts to Front, Left, Right, Crown and Rear | Kerb anvil |

SHARP rates a helmet 1 to 5 star according to its quality and impact absorption capability. Calculation of the safety rating is complex so to enable the identification of those helmets likely to offer the highest level of protection, the ratings are expressed as a simple star rating with 5‐stars being the highest and 1‐star the lowest.
