How is the MotoGP Grid Decided?
The starting grid features 3 columns. The qualifying speed or position determines the positioning in the MotoGP Grid. It’s in the ascending order of the qualifying position or descending order of qualifying speed. The less time you take in the qualification or the better position you have, the more front position you get in the grid for the sprint and the race.
Racers take part in the Practice session where the top 10 finishers get entry to Qualifying 2. The remaining racers move to Qualifying 1 and from there, 2 more top finishers get tickets for the Q2. A total of 12 riders take part in the Q2. According to the finishing time or position in the Q2, the riders grab the top 12 grid positions in the race & sprint. Riders who qualify from the Q1 take places from the 13th onwards based on their finishing spot.

The racer who finishes 1st in the Q2 takes the pole position. He will enjoy the pole spot in both “the sprint” as well as “the race”. However, to make a place in the Q2, he either needs to finish within the top 10 in the Practice or requires to finish within the top 2 in the Q1.
