What is JASO Certification for Engine Oil?

What is the full form of JASO? What is JASO Certification? Also, What is the difference between JASO FC and JASO FB? What is the difference between JASO and SAE? Is JASO MA2 good for wet clutch? What is the difference between JASO FC and FD? Find details about the JASO and its grade for the certification motorcycle of engine oil.

What is JASO Certified Oil?

JASO is the short form for the ” Japanese Automotive Standards Organization”. The alluded organization sets automotive standards in Japan. It’s quite like the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) in the USA. Well, JASO developed a grading system for motorcycle oils in 1998. The motorcycle engine oil grading system developed by JASO is labeled as the “JASO Certification for Engine Oil”. The engine oils that maintain the Jaso standards are known as the JASO Certified Oil.

What is JASO Grade?

JASO 4T specification features 4 different categories.

Category Description
JASO MA Suitable for motorcycles with wet clutches. This specification is non-friction modified. It saves the clutch from slipping. Applicable for 4-stroke motorcycles featuring one oil system for the engine, gearbox, and clutch.
JASO MA1 Applicable to bikes which do not require the same oil for the engine, gearbox, and clutch. Hence, Jaso MA1 is used in bikes that need different oils for all these parts.
JASO MA2 Suitable for the latest, up-to-date motorcycles. These bikes do have catalytic converters in the exhaust system.
JASO MB JASO MB oil is for bikes that have automatic transmissions. It is friction-modified just opposite to the JASO MA. This type of oil causes slippage of the clutch. Thus one can’t use it in exchange for the JASO MA grade oils. It is especially used in the scooters.

What is the difference between JASO FC, FB, and FD?

There are 4 more categories for the JASO 2T specifications.

Category Details
JASO FA Used for detergency, exhaust smoke, exhaust blocking, lubrication capability, and initial torque
JASO FB It’s actually the higher version of its predecessor (FA). Also correlates with ISO Global Specification EGB. Has similarities with the JASO FA but comes up with enhanced lubrication capability.
JASO FC Able to provide high standards in case of detergency, exhaust system blocking, as well as smoke
JASO FD Applied with higher detergency requirement. Meanwhile, has similar working principle like JASO FC.

Which is better, JASO MA or JASO MA2?

JASO MA2 is the latest version. It’s applicable for the latest bikes which have catalytic converters in their exhaust system. Overall, JASO MA2 is more up-to-date and provides better performance than MA or MA1.

Is it okay to use JASO MA2 instead of MB?

JASO MB isn’t designed in a way to lubricate the clutch. Thus it can generate a series of problems. The problems include the likes of the clutch slipping, excessive friction, ensuing degradation, the system heating up, etc. One can’t use JASO MB instead of JASO MA or MA2. However, one can use JASO MA2 in exchange for JASO MB. Moreover, JASO MB is the best option for the scooters.
