What is the Meaning of Newton Meter (Nm)?

Bikers may find the term NM or Newton Meter while observing different specifications of their motorcycles. However, many of them don’t understand actually what it is. In this content, we will reveal the meaning of Newton meter (Nm) that you see related to the bike’s torque. Also find, What is meant by 1 Nm or How strong is 1 Nm?

What is the Meaning of Newton Meters Torque?

NM is the short form of Newton Meter. It’s the SI unit of the torque. That’s why you see it while configuring your motorcycle’s max torque. Newton is the unit of Force meanwhile Meter is the unit of Distance. However, together they stand for as the unit of the torque.

How much is 1 Nm in torque?

What does 1 Nm mean? 1 newton-meter is the torque result when one-newton force is applied to a one-meter-long moment arm. In simple words, 1 nm is the force of one Newton on a one-meter-long lever.

What is 1 Nm Equal to?

It is equivalent to 0.738 lb/ft. lb/ft is also a unit of torque.

1 NM = (1 Kg * 1 M^2) ÷ (1 S^2)

Actually, 1 Newton = 1 Kg ÷ 1 S^2.

It’s because 1 N refers to: the amount of force needed to accelerate 1 kg of mass 1 meter per second squared  (applicable in a specific vector of direction). The name Newton seems familiar right? Well, it’s named after the renowned scientist Sir Isaac Newton. You have certainly heard about the Apple story of him. He was an English mathematician, physicist, astronomer as well as a theologian. He invented numerous theories that gave him immortality. His special inventions were the Three Laws of Motion and the Law of Gravity.

Newton-meter resulted from multiplying the force (F) and the distance (r) from the rotation point.

How to Calculate Torque?

T(torque) = F(force) * s(distance from pivot) * sin(theta)

Theta refers to the angle between the force as well as the position vector.
