What is a Cylinder Head in a Bike?

A cylinder head is a part of an automotive engine. It also exists in your motorcycle engine. How do cylinder heads affect performance? Do cylinder heads increase horsepower? How long will a cylinder head last? What are the disadvantages of cylinder heads? Can you drive without a cylinder head? Let’s know details about the bike or motorcycle engine’s cylinder head.

What is a Cylinder Head of a Motorcycle?

It is a part of the bike engines. Constructors manufacture it using different materials. It’s mostly made of cast iron aluminum alloy. It is responsible for controlling the input of the airflow into the cylinder and the outgoing airflow from the cylinder. It also oversees the fuel deployment. It works as the cap or gateway of the cylinder of the engine. Indeed, it acts as the roof of the combustion chamber.

Where is the Cylinder Head Located?

Based on the engine type, a cylinder head can have different positions. It sits above the cylinders in the piston engines. Meanwhile, it’s a simple plate of metal in side-valve engines. The components like spark plugs and heat dissipation fins are carried by it. By the way, it comes as a complicated metal block in the overhead valve and overhead camshaft engines. The latest mentioned engine type is the modern kind of engine. And there the head contains inlet and exhaust passages as well. In fact, it may also carry the likes of coolant passages, Valvetrain components, as well as fuel injectors.

How Many Cylinder Heads Are in an Engine?

The number of cylinder heads also varies based on the engine type. In the modern engines which come with a “straight” (inline) layout, you can see a single cylinder head for all the cylinders. But there is a cylinder head allocated for every bank of cylinders in the piston engines. On the other hand, “V” layout or “flat” layout engines have 2 cylinder banks and with 1 for each bank, there are a total of 2 cylinder heads.

What are the Main Components of a Cylinder Head?

A cylinder head features the following components:

  • Inlet and Exhaust Ducts
  • Inlet and Exhaust Valves
  • Camshafts
  • Injectors
  • Glow Plugs.

What is the Main Purpose of a Cylinder Head?

A cylinder head closes the combustion chamber of the engine from the top. Sitting on the engine it closes off the combustion chamber. Just to tell you, an engine block is located below the engine, as opposed to a cylinder head. So the primary task of a cylinder head to is seal the top of the cylinder. It also retains the fuel in the cylinder of the engine.

What is the Most Common Problem with the Cylinder Heads?

An increased abrasion can cause a leaking cylinder head gasket. High temperatures and strong vibrations can cause defects in the cylinder head itself. It may generate cracks in the material of the head. Overheating is a major issue associated with the cylinder head. It’s also the most common form of damage.

How do I know if my Cylinder Head is Bad?

If your Cylinder Head has gone bad or isn’t working properly, it will show some serious symptoms. Those include:

Overheating: With the cylinder being under tremendous heat, the combustion chamber components may overheat. Being unable to pass the coolant there is disruption in the size & shape. However, a full & good radiator can solve this issue.

Oil Leaks: A cracked cylinder head can cause the leakage of oils. The leakage of oil is a sign of a bad cylinder head.

Poor Engine Performance: If your engine is not performing well enough, then it might be because of a bad cylinder head. It can have a serious consequence on the lifespan of the engine and the vehicle.

Smoke: With a cracked cylinder head, smoke may come out of the exhaust. It’s also a clear indicator of such a problem.

Drop-In Coolant Level: Another symptom could be the drop-in the coolant level.

Can Cylinder Heads be Repaired?

One can repair a cracked cylinder head rather than replace it. However, it depends on the location and extent of the damage. Can you replace the cylinder head without removing the engine? This convenience is available in some of the vehicles where you can remove the cylinder head even without pulling the engine out.
