What is BS6 Engine in Bike?

What is the full form of BS6? Or, What does BS6 stand for? What is a BS6 engine? Which is better, BS6 or BS4? What is the performance of BS6 engine? What is the top speed of BS6? Is BS6 bike good? What are the requirements for BS6 engine? How does a BS6 engine work? Does BS6 engine have spark plugs? What is the engine capacity of BS6? This content will answer all your questions regarding the BS6 engine or bike. Find details about the BS6 engine in the bike.

What is BS6 Engine in Bike?

What is the meaning of BS6? Well, BS6 is the short form of Bharat Stage VI for emission standards. It’s the 6th iteration or more precisely the 5th as the authority skipped BS-V. BS-VI engines are the new generation engine that complies with Bharat Stage Emission Standards VI edition. BS6 engines are designed in such a way that they will emit less pollutant gases than BS4 engines. The authority has implemented it since April 2020.

BS6 engines come up with direct injection technology. In this mechanism, the injector makes sure that the fuel injection goes directly into the cylinder and in opposed of moving directly to the intake manifold. It also features catalytic converters.

Is BS6 Bike Good or Bad?

Definitely, BS6 is good enough in fact the best of the time. It has fewer impacts on the environment as it injects lesser bad components. Due to less sulfur in the fuel, the BS6 engines generate less harmful emissions and pollutants. And yes, definitely BS6 is better than BS4. Should I buy BS6 or BS4? You should buy BS6 engines. In India, the sale of BS4 engine vehicles was banned after 31st March 2020.

What is the Limit of BS6?

Variant of Fuel Gaseous Pollutants BS-VI Limit
Petroleum Distillate Vehicle Particulate Matter (PM) Limit 4.5 mg/km
Nitrogen Oxide (NOx) Limit 60 mg
Diesel Fuel Vehicle HC + NOx 170 mg/km
Particulate Matter (PM) Limit 4.5 mg/km
Nitrogen Oxide (NOx) Limit 80 mg

Does BS6 have Carburetor?

The BS6 bikes have fuel injection instead of carburetors. This system asks for some fuel to be present to function properly. In the older bikes where there were no fuel injections, users could run those till the tank became completely dry. Moreover, What is the ideal rpm of a BS6 bike? The ideal rpm for a BS6 bike would range between 700-1,000 rpm.

Benefits of BS6 Engine in Bikes

BS6 engines offer some crucial advantages. Those are:

  • BS6 engines’ biggest facility is they are environmentally friendly and less harmful.
  • Helps to adopt greener & cleaner emission norms.
  • Provides cleaner air.
  • These engines are more fuel efficient.
  • Improved fuel quality.
  • Features real-time emission monitoring systems.
  • Efficient combustion process.
  • Contributing to environment conservation.
  • Long-term sustainability.

What are the Disadvantages of BS6?

There are a couple of drawbacks as well.

  • Expensive to generate and hence has a higher up-front cost. So one may feel budget issues while purchasing.
  • The maintenance & repair might be a bit complex.
  • Can have effects on older vehicles.
  • One may face limited availability of fuel.
  • Users will have less mileage than BS4.
  • There might be some reliability issues considering the complexity of technology.
  • There must be some fuel present to function properly. Otherwise the engine may suffer damage.

Will BS6 Increase Mileage?

Generally, the BS6 engines won’t increase mileage. As the fuel is cleaner and has less sulfur it will be environment friendly and good for the engines. But the mileage will be less in the BS6 engines than the BS4 engines. Does BS6 engine give more mileage? No.

How much petrol should be there in BS6?

There must be at least a liter of petrol present. The fuel pump becomes completely empty when the tank is empty. And if the rider tries to run the pump when there is no liquid, it may cause damage. By the way, it’s not mandatory to keep 2-3 litres of petrol.

How to Identify BS6 engine?

One can identify whether the engine is BS6 or BS4 by checking out the vehicle’s manufacturing date, registration number, VIN, and RTO Form 21.

BS6 vs BS7

BS6 is the latest implemented Bharat Stage Standards. It has been in effect since April 1st, 2020. However, there is no official news when BS7 will emerge. But BS7 will definitely be a more improved technology and will be more environment-friendly as well.
